Employee Satisfaction Creates Engaged Employees

This is the time of year for spreading good will and happiness. Creating a culture of employee satisfaction is the best way for this to happen in business. And the best part of all is that when employee satisfaction is high, both employees and businesses benefit.

High employee satisfaction creates a positive culture in your business, a culture that is rewarding for all stake holders. The Science of Happiness report by Globoforce, a company that specializes in workplace culture, explains. In their report they compare employees who are most and least happy at work. These comparisons show that happier employees:

• Stay twice as long in their jobs as their least happy colleagues
• Believe they are achieving their potential two times as much as least happy colleagues
• Spend 65 percent more time feeling energized than their less happy colleagues
• Are 58 percent more likely to go out of the way to help their colleagues
• Identify 98 percent more strongly with the values of their organization

There are several things you can do to create this happiness and employee satisfaction among employees. The Science of Happiness report says concentrating your efforts on employees is the best way to create employee satisfaction. While this seems obvious, think about the ways that focusing on your employees can benefit the entire organization, and spread the engagement beyond one happy satisfied employee.

Quantum Workplace is a research firm that has established the “Best Places to Work” programs in more than 40 metropolitan areas. It has identified key factors that set companies with higher engagement scores apart from others. Among other factors, these companies:

• set a clear, compelling direction that empowers each employee
• maintain a focus on career growth and development

Both of these actions are integral parts of a TAP program. Identifying career paths and providing the career and academic counseling so employees can advance on these paths helps employees make the best use of their tuition dollars and the time they spend in their academic pursuits. Career growth and development can mean moving into new positions or learning new skills to move ahead in current jobs. Helping employees see the direction their education can take them and guiding them towards career growth creates a sense of employee satisfaction and increases their involvement with the company.

Aon Hewitt’s 2012 Global Engagement Report found that concern for career opportunities is the top global driver of employee engagement and recommends that employers work to create employee growth opportunities. Heidi College, CEO of Career Bliss says, “We see career advancement programs have a big impact on overall employee happiness. Often employees will take a job for a lower salary if the company provides a comprehensive program and mentorship programs, which will help grow their career. Employees want to learn, develop and sustain a successful career path.” Sustaining a successful career path and the opportunity to advance in a company and to use their skills and abilities is important to 56 percent of employees according to SHRM data.

Helping employees use their tuition assistance for career development and to move further down a career path also creates a belief in employees that their work is meaningful, which is important to employee satisfaction and happiness at work. And it benefits the company as much as it benefits the employee. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Alberta found that people who focused on the meaning and purpose in their work experienced a 60 percent drop in absenteeism and a 75 percent reduction in turnover.

Ways to increase employee happiness, satisfaction and engagement at work are close at hand. Tuition assistance plans give employees the opportunity to move along satisfying career paths, develop their skills and find meaning in their work. When work opportunities and career development prospects converge, employee satisfaction will result. TAP is a source of good will and cheer that promotes employee satisfaction and will continue indefinitely.
