Edcor Procedures in Place as Sarbanes-Oxley
Deadline Looms
"The Corporate world is facing a radical
new era in its auditing and accounting practices and it will
all begin in less than 100 days", says Edcor, Chief Operating
Officer, Russ Milano. When discussing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act,
Mr. Milano sites the act's April deadline and the need for
corporations to comply with the "whistle blower"
process which companies must have active by the April 2003
deadline. Mr. Milano urges companies to "plan their whistle
blower compliance strategies now, while there is still time."
Mr. Milano adds, that all companies large and
small need to evaluate the cost of handling such a service
"in-house" versus outsourcing the work. The time,
internal resources, and costs associated with keeping the
process in-house will quickly add up and for many companies
become unaffordable. Limited solutions such as voice-mail
have proven to be inadequate, compromising the caller's anonymity
and increasing their fear of retribution. Those organizations
that wait may find themselves unable to have a solution implemented
in time to meet the April deadline.
When explaining Edcor's vast compliance and
hotline experience, Mr. Milano points out the value of using
an independent third party in soliciting honest employee feedback
and the importance of making available a means of reporting
problems or concerns to someone outside the supervisory chain
who is able to take quick and decisive action. Mr. Milano
reiterates, "now is the time to start preparing compliance
procedures to meet the April deadline, whether handled in-house
or outsourced." Despite the publicity generated from
Time Magazine naming the "whistleblowers" as its
Persons of the Year, few companies have begun to focus on
their own whistle blower process.
