Did You Know Edcor Can Help With Short-Term Learning?

Peter Drucker once said the best way to predict the future is to create it, and I think about that line more than I probably should, usually in the middle of a call with an HR leader trying to figure out how to move a workforce forward without having to wait years to get there. As a former HR leader with 2 decades of experience in workforce management, I know that for some employees, traditional degrees aren’t the best fit because they do not have years to develop the skills they need, and neither do the businesses paying their salaries.

At Edcor, we kept hearing the same thing from HR partners across our Client base: that employees wanted a guided map to their next role instead of just access to education benefits, and that map had to fit their schedules. Some of those employees were ready to commit to a full degree. Most were not, at least not yet. What they wanted was something faster they could start this month.

That pressure is what pushed us to build and formalize Edcor Critical Pathways, a program we launched three years ago and continue to grow today, marking a major step in our approach to workforce development.

This is the piece of our business I want to talk about here, because I do not think enough of you know we do it.

The Timeline Has Changed

The latest research by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center aligns with the trend we’ve observed; Undergraduate Certificate programs posted the fastest growth of any undergraduate credential type this spring, up 10.2 percent, while overall undergraduate enrollment only grew 1.3 percent. People are choosing speed in large numbers, and that shift lines up with something bigger happening across the entire labor market. The World Economic Forum projects that 59 percent of the global workforce will need reskilling or upskilling by 2030 because of AI and automation, with nearly 40 percent of core job skills expected to change in that same window. The skills gap is arriving on a timeline that does not match a traditional degree calendar, and HR teams are the ones left figuring out how to close it in real time.

Why Short-Term Still Builds Real Momentum

Complete College America found that learners earning stackable credentials are 30 percent more likely to complete higher-level qualifications. And this is what you’ll like about the stats: stackable pathways lead to 40 percent higher retention rates for adult learners.

That tells us something about how people actually engage with this kind of learning. They start with one certificate, get a win, and keep going. Momentum compounds when the first step is small enough actually to take. We saw this in our own benchmark data too, and Edcor has offered a range of stackable certificates for your employees to take advantage of, long before Edcor Critical Pathways was formalized.

What Edcor Delivers

We work through an extensive network of school partners and education platforms built to deliver fast, targeted learning, and it runs through the same benefit infrastructure you already have in place. A program can be a single certificate finished in a few weeks, or it can be the first rung of something that stacks toward a bigger credential later. It can also be a micro-credential or bootcamp earning certificates of completion if your policy allows for it. If you want to run these as separate programs within a different cost center – that can be done too. To this end, we stay in the conversation with the HR leaders driving the initiative the whole time. We sit down, learn what your workforce actually needs, and help build the right mix of short-term options to close that gap.

Along with a network of trusted Colleges and Universities, we have education partnerships with premium brands in the industry that have been and can deliver programs at scale in your area of need. Their subject areas line up closely with what our Clients are asking for lately: AI, data, leadership, management, and digital transformation.

How This Connects Back to Critical Pathways

If you read our earlier piece on Edcor Critical Pathways, you already know we mapped that program around nine functions our clients hire for constantly: Leadership, Project Management, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Allied Health and Nursing, among them. Short-term learning was built into that framework from day one. Every one of those nine pathways already includes short-term options next to the degree programs, so someone can start small and decide later whether to keep going.

You don’t need the full nine-pathway structure to get short-term learning moving, though. Sometimes the fastest path forward is picking the right program through our school network or a partner and getting someone enrolled this week. We build it either way, structured through Critical Pathways when you want that framework, or customized entirely around what your specific workforce needs.

This is also part of why we built many of these short-term programs to run at zero cost to employees, for Clients already offering $5,250 and above in annual tuition benefits. Once that barrier disappears, people stop overthinking it and enroll. I have watched that happen enough times now to know it is not a coincidence.

What This Means for Your Organization

If you are an HR leader reading this, I would ask you to think about two things.

  • Where in your organization is someone sitting one skill away from a promotion they are otherwise ready for?
  • And where do you have a role you keep trying to fill from outside, when the right person is probably already on your team, just missing one focused credential to get there?

Short-term learning answers both, and it answers them fast.
