5 Ways HR Leaders Can Boost Nurse Retention With Education Benefits

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity,” said Albert Einstein.

Come to think of it, the quote, in many ways, speaks directly to the ongoing nurse shortages in the Healthcare industry. Every day, HR professionals and Healthcare leaders feel the pressure of nurse shortages while seeing their teams stretched, patients affected, and budgets strained. However, I believe we are not powerless. We can turn things around, and one of the most effective levers at our disposal is education benefits. At Edcor, I’ve witnessed how transformational these programs can be, not just for retaining valuable nurses but also for building the next generation of clinical leaders.

Why Nurse Retention Matters

Let’s look at some data. According to the 2025 NSI National Health Care Retention & RN Staffing Report,

  • The average U.S. hospital’s RN turnover rate reached 16.4%.
  • Nearly one-third of new nurses leave within their first year.
  • Hospitals lose between $3.9 and $5.7 million each year due to RN turnover, and
  • Just a 1% change in turnover can cost or save approximately $289,000 because of overtime, use of travel nurses, and lost productivity.

On top of that, since 2022, we have lost more than 138,000 nurses from the workforce, and projections show the U.S. will have a nurse shortage of more than 500,000 RNs this year. More than one in six hospitals reports critical staff gaps, forcing them to close units and turn patients away.

Our mission is to make sure we don’t have to accept this as the new normal. Utilizing education benefits has been a game-changer in keeping nurses engaged, upwardly mobile, and loyal to the employer. So, let’s unwrap the major barriers that Nurses face in the uptake of education benefits and how we can help them.
